Sign the Petition - Say "NO" to the Jail

Join Kelly Cross, candidate for Baltimore City Council - District 12, in calling on the current Mayor and City Council -- and all those to be elected this fall -- to bring a new purpose to the Baltimore City Men's Jail.

For generations, the jail has a been a symbol of the City's culture of incarceration. We must make sure that this facility is never again used for that purpose.

We have an opportunity to make it a world-class center of art and culture. Renowned architects Thom Mayne and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk have noted the potential of the jail as a museum. Imagine a museum on the scale of London's Tate, in the heart of the City,  connecting neighborhoods and providing local jobs for the people of Baltimore.

Add your name to Kelly's in calling for a new use of the jail. Sign up now!

This building is Baltimore’s Pantheon! Not only is it Baltimore’s most significant structure, it is one of the most substantial and recognizable historic buildings in the country! I lived in Baltimore for only eight years and moved away 14 years ago. (I have lived in two other US cities and three European cities since then, including Rome.) The Maryland Penitentiary structure – and its location in an urban center – remains one of the most impressive, proud, and majestic feats of architecture to grace civilization…ANYWHERE…and is one of the architectural sites that I talk about most when lecturing or traveling. Baltimore officials and residents are not quick to embrace the elements that make it the BEST CITY IN THE COUNTRY, and surely, tearing this structure down will quicken its fall to mediocrity, or worse yet, to a ghost city that only lives in photographs.

Allowing this structure to come down is like willingly having one’s head amputated.

What can I do to help? Tie myself to the door?
